"No doubt about the fact that a natural disaster can occur on Earth, but how would the Earth look like if a huge disaster had happened? Our imagination would show us a picture of an empty world with nothing. Maybe the huge disaster could be the cause of the end of the world. We have been wondering for years about the fact that when the world will end. If the world went under by a disaster, probably some human-beings would make it out alive through that disaster. But surviving after a huge disaster had happened can not be easy. “The Road”, written by Cormac Mccarthy, is a clear example of that. A boy and his father are the main characters in the story, and they have survived a huge disaster that had happened, probably all over the world. We don't get to know their names, and their only need is to find some food everyday.

In the story, we don't get to know what kind of disaster that had happened. But the first thing that comes in our mind is that it might be a global disaster, because it seems to be that there wasn't somebody to save the boy and the father or the other surviving human-beings. Basically we get the impression of that almost every human-beings on Earth are dead. The story only takes place in an unknown region of America, where everything is covered with ash, dust and fire almost everywhere. The sunlight could not go through the grey clouds, which means every single day was grey as the clouds. It is interesting why Cormac Mccarthy does not mention what kind of disaster that caused the destruction. Perhaps he had no idea what kind of disaster it should be, when he wrote the book. No doubt about the fact that the book is reflecting the real life, because the circumstances we see in the story might happen in real life. We have not seen it yet, and so hasn't Cormac Mccarthy, and that could be the reason why he has not mentioned, the cause for the massive death and destruction. For an instance it is not enough just saying that a volcanic eruption caused the world go to hell, because we know that it won't, just by an volcanic eruption. It has to be something bigger. By not saying the name of the disaster, gives us readers the ability to focus on what really happened in the story. While reading the book, we only focus on to find out what happened, even though the book is kind of boring, we still get the inclination to finish the book, only to find out what happened. That might be Cormac Mccarthy's intention, when he is not saying the name of the disaster. If we already knew from the start what happened, we might not desire to finish the book, as the book is written in different kind of style that might confuse the readers."
