Au pair in England
The English middle class has gotten a bad reputation if we were to believe a report recently been published. An organization called International Youth Welfare, and London University made the report together, of/with material collected from questionnaires sent out to about 1500 au pair girls in different parts of England. Three quarters of the questionnaires were returned and it showed some unpleasant facts about how young girls who come to England to learn the language are treated. 
There is often a big difference between what the young girls are told before they leave and the way they are treated by their host families in England. A large number says that they only earn £9 per week, and they are working approximately 50 hours per week, and a lot of them don’t eat with the host families and they don’t get enough food. 
The chairman of International Youth Welfare, Dom Placid, who is a monk came to England 20 years ago and he still lives there. He, as well as, others in the organisation thinks that it is important that the situation for au pair girls is known so that the bad conditions can be improved. The organisation has therefore suggested a booklet to all the au pair girls, who come to England and to the host families. This could perhaps give the English middle-class families a better reputation in other European countries.
