Rettelse af engelsk stil (2 sider)

19. april 2011 af ceren (Slettet) - Niveau: B-niveau

Hej :)

Analysis and interpretation of “Irregularities”

The short story “Irregularities” is written by Courtney Jones and published in 2003. The story deals with various aspects of human life and the consequences of hopeless love. The narrator is a young woman, whose name we do not know. She is an administrative assistant, and she is having an affair with her boss, James Soleander. She unfortunately gets pregnant, and the baby is with the boss. We discover it in line 11: "My boss, James Soleander, M.D., doesn't even know yet about the baby inside me, though I believe he ought to. He's the one who put it there.” The narrator is confused about having a baby without having planned to have one. Furthermore she seems to be immature and naive. She does not rely on herself, and she believes in almost anything she reads in woman magazines. In the text page 8, paragraph 5: “I was into trying New Things after I read an article about their positive effects in a woman´s magazine.”

Dr. Soleander is the narrator’s boss, and he lives a high-class life which he can afford since he is a good doctor. I believe he is a bit older than the narrator. Compared to her, he is definitely more mature. He is married to a beautiful wife, but Dr. Soleander flirts a lot with the narrator and is also unfaithful to his wife. Their relationship developed from a good and emotional relationship to a normal boss/secretary relationship. Dr. Soleander is a heart doctor and is very interested in the narrator´s heart. Page 10, line 89: “Dr. Soleander is attracted to my heart. He has become addicted to my irregular heartbeat”. This means James Soleander is attracted to the narrator’s heartbeat which is irregular and it is fascinating to him since he is a doctor. Furthermore he has nice shoes and wears cashmere sweaters something that the narrator never really had contact with until she started working for him (page 9, line 50). They are from two difference stages in society. Furthermore the narrator says that James Soleander’s office is furnished well than her apartment, it means she is not that rich.

The relationship develops during the story. The affair started when Dr. Soleander examined the narrator’s heartbeat. The narrator is very surprised that someone was interested in her for something that was wrong with her, and therefore the boss fascinates the narrator. James Soleander is fascinated with her irregular heart, and with those two things put together, they do it right on the desk. The narrator does not see their relationship as a typical boss/secretary affair (page 10, line 78), but as the story develops, it becomes clear that this is exactly what it is. Before the narrator and Dr. Soleander’s little incident, he was very forthcoming to his administrative assistant. He had bought her gifts for her office. In the text line 26: “Until I get to my office, sit in my ergonomically correct rolling chair in front of my ergonomically correct keyboard”, and he came into her office once in a while to have a chat and give her an assignment, that he only trusted her with. Moreover, while she was pregnant, he picked her as his second choice when his wife could not go to a medical conference in Hilton Head. But after the narrator tells him about her pregnancy, he avoids her. So their relationship developed from a good and emotional relationship to a boss/secretary relationship.

The important theme in this text is irregularities. Dr. Soleander makes the narrator feel irregular by talking about her heartbeat. But when we are talking about irregularities, we have to talk about Dr. Soleander as well. It’s not a regular thing to cheat on your wife and especially not to feel bad about it afterwards. Another irregularity is the way the narrators seeks and finds love. Furthermore I believe that irregularities describe how people are fixated with faults instead of focusing on positive things. Maybe things are not always as bad as they seem, and when you get obsessed with irregularity you may often overlook the real problem. Other themes in the short story are unrequited love, pregnancy and not being able to tell the truth. The narrator is hopelessly in love with her boss, Dr. Soleander, who unfortunately is married to a lovely woman, which he has not intended to leave. The main character is in an unfortunate predicament, because she is expecting Dr. Soleander’s child. The narrator has to accept the fact that Dr. Soleander will not leave his wife, but still has to know the truth about their common baby. Furthermore the themes are also affairs, motherhood, and relationships. The narrator experience motherly feeling for her baby and that is very new to her. Her relationship to Dr. Soleander change drastically because of the affair. All these things together put the young woman in a confused situation, which she has difficulties handling. Whenever something unexpected happens you easily get frustrated like the narrator in this case. Despite of the affair with the boss, the young woman is alone with all her thoughts because she does not share the secret with him. If you lose something, which is precious to you, it is important to get back on track so you will have a normal working day even though an important part of you is missing. A baby can truly be a soul mate and the loss of one can truly be an emotionally dead.

The story is built up over the narrator’s pregnancy. As she is getting more and more aware of the baby, Dr. Soleander is getting lesser and lesser aware of her. When the narrator loses the baby then their relationship suddenly changes. The story is also built up around her thoughts and actions. The story takes place the same day as she went to Turkey Gobbler (page 8, line 22). She uses flash backs to tell about her relationship with her boss. An example is when she tells how the relationship started in an irregular way (page 9-10 line 75-83). In this connection the story is built up quite chronological, except for the flashbacks.

Ceren, og lykke111, det er du altså selv udenom...

Når man snyder, finder læreren ud af det, og de kan altså også se, at du skriver af, ved at køre din stil gennem google, så lav du hellere dine egne ting en anden gang..
