“A peep into a slave – mart”
Memorie by Joseph Ingraham (1835)

A young planter (plantageejer) asks his friend to come with him to the slave – mart (slave marked). The two men rides to the slave market and goes through the gate (låge) and into the yard (gård). There they see a line of Negroes entering with the tallest in front and down to the lowest (forms a semicicle). Tey are all dressed in good and fashionably uniforms.
All the slaves stands in perfectly order while the buyers are checking their eyes and teeth to see if they are healthy and strong enough.
At last the planter choose a good looking young boy George – after that he has checked his teeth and asked him a lot of question. He and the seller are negotiating (forhandle) for a while and then he gets a paper on the trade (handel). While the two men are talking George is standing quietly, and he gets proud and delighted when the seller tells him that he has been bought. The other slaves congratulates him.

Analysis
We are in the deep South. The Planter is from the south and his friend is probably from North America ( a Yankee).
The Negroes are being humiliated while they stands in the line they are being cheked like horses - animals. We can see that the Yankee is not used to go to slave markets and he thinks that it is strange and is surprised. Even though he is not used to this he does’nt see slaves as human beings “and looked with some degree of intelligence..” The narrator (yankee) of course knows about what is going on in the South but this is the first time he sees the reality in South. He does’nt asks any question about why they are treated like this but only observes thing.
The slaves are like animals it’s like they cannot think for themselves and their language is very bad even though the slave George is about 20 he talks like someone who is only five years old. The slaves have been raised like this, they dont question things but accept it. The most scary thing is the ending when George is happy about being selled his mind is probably in the same stage as when he was five years old. He and the other slaves are like maschine or animal that can’t think. They are not ashamed of being treated like this and they dont revolt (oprør) but accepts it because they have never learned any thing else. They have never experienced freedom. They dont know how it is to be free. Free in both a mentally and physically way.

De fleste af dine fejl kommer når du skal bøje verber - husk at der skal -s på i nutid når det er tredje person ental, men IKKE når det er flertal. "He asks, they ask" og "He sees, they see", f.eks.

"A beautiful car"
"The act was brilliant"
"The sun shone beautifully"
"The students scored brilliantly"

osv.

Hmm, lidt tegnproblemer...

“and looked with some degree of intelligence..” - her skal det være anførselstegn.

it’s = it's

can’t = can't
