Rettelse af en engelsk essay

hej....jeg kan da godt lige prøve at rette den igennem, men kan ikke love noget. Sidder faktisk også selv med en lidt tricky engelsk højniveau oversættelse jeg faktisk godt kunne tænke mig nogen kigge på.

>Af en eller anden gruund virkede det ikke da jeg sendte den til din mail. Jeg fik en besked om at den ikke kun blive afleveret å jeg håber da du ser denne besked!Jeg må indrømme at der var mange knudrede sætninger, og jeg har kun rettet de værste,eftersom jeg selv har en del afleveringer at se til. Du kan tage det du synes du kan bruge. Der kommer nogle gode pointer frem, men gramatikken skal du arbejde med. Genrelt: der skal komma foran 'and' og 'but' og flere gange starter du en sætning med 'because' hvilket man jo heller ikke ville gøre i dansk stil. Husk genitiven! Nu kender jeg ikke historien så jeg synes det var svært at vurdere mange ting, men håber det hjalp en smule!

>In the story, “Glasnost” there are some points which characterize the difference between the Eastern and the Western society. The couples we hear about in the story present the differences view??, attitudes of some people in the Western countries, and what kind (enten what kind of things eller what sort of things)sort of things they appreciate. >We meet the Richardson’s, Edward and Joy, who travel a lot. They think that their way of spending a vacation is the right way and they see themselves as being different from other “normal” tourists. Today it is normal that most of the traveller's intention is to enjoy the food and the sun in a foreign country, but the Richardson's do not only have a tendency to enjoy the food and the sun, but also they want to fuse together with the culture, meet other people, and through people experience a lot.
> We see how Edward and Joy are pride of themselves in the beginning of the story when they first become conscious of Dean and Thelma at the airport: “There”, Edward said smugly to Joy, “are a couple of American tourists”. The Richardson's were very good at looking at tourists and despising them….” This sentence describes Edward and Joy as unconscious prejudiced persons and they feel very superior.
>Richardsons have an idea of being so open-minded in the beginning of the story . But their conceptions of Uzbekistan’s people and the culture change as Dean tells his “knowledge” about the carpet Dima and (mener du som...?så skal der stå which...)Natasha had given them as a gift. Because(helst ikke begynde med because, men kæd det sammen med sætn. før) in the beginning of the story Joy and Edward think that they changed their wiev upon people when they are accepted into a strange culture: “…. You get a totally new perspective when you are accepted into an alien culture”. So they like Dima and Natasha and love to go abroad for the people. That might also be the reason for why Edward gives his Nikon camera to Dima and looks forward to see them in England.
>Thelma and Dean are a complete contrast to the Richardsons. Thelma and Dean are more like “real” tourists in a totally foreign country. They do not know how to fuse with the culture and the inhabitants. The Intourist taxi has broken down and Dima Rashidov offers to give them a ride to Samarkand, but Dean looks suspicious while Thelma clutched her purse tightly. The fact that a friendly man offers a ride, suspicious as they are, makes Thelma and Dean almost suspect him as an evil person with bad plans. They only misinterprete Rashidov's (genitiv!!!)hospitality no matter what he does without expecting anything in return; “I wish there was some way we could repay them”, said Edward. “I’m sure they’ll think of something, “said Dean. “
>Dima and Natasha show Edward and Joy the real meaning of Glasnost. Rashidovs are very kind and hospitable that they present Joy with things she admires. Etc the spoon and the Bokhara rug which have been in Dima`s family for generations. It is an heirloom which we know may mean a lot for some people and no one will easily give an heirloom away. But Dima gives it to them before they leave Uzbekistan as a memory from their Uzbekistan friends, but they do not understand the real meaning of the rug, which was an heirloom for Rahidovs.
>“To the Uzbeks, the most generous friends in the world “said Edward, who was beginning to see the point of all this toasting”. I think Edward and Joy apply double standards. As we can read in the sentence they like Natasha and Dima until Dean on the airplane says that the Bokhara rug is an Afghan copy. She liked the Bokhara rug: “When they boarded the plane back to Moscow, Edward had the little rug rolled up under his arm as hand baggage as Joy did`nt want to let it out of her sight”. Joy keeps Thelma to tha(??)t the rug is an old Bokhara and wants Thelma to look at it and see how beautiful it is. Untill Thelma convince her by saying that Dean is in floor furnishing and know about carpets and their qualities. Suddenly Joy changes her thought about the Bokhara: “And now that Joy looked at it again, the rug that had gleamed and shimmered in the Rashidovs` hallway seemed flatter and smaller. The subtle colour, Joy now saw, was harsh and chemical”. This is a totally double standard you ever can imagine. It is funny that Edward and Joy thought they were superior and clever than other people when they can be manipulated with Dean`s work as a floor furnishing when his job does not mean that he knows about carpets.

>Edward left some bottles of vodka and his Nikon camera in Dimas car in return for their hospitality. This shows that Edward or Joy not are open-minded as they think and this also shows the cultural problems between west and east. I do not think Edward should change his thought when he becomes convinced that the rug is fake because Dima gave his heirloom to them as a present and he did not expect anything in return(mangler kommaer!). But Edward has got double standards and is very ignorant that he thinks he had been cold-bloodedly conned out of some bottles of vodka and a very expensive camera. All this also shows how materialistic the Richardson’s are. They only find the gift worthy when it has a certain value, otherwise the gift has a place at the toilet where people can walk on it. This is a typical western civilization and its dependence on materialistic things. In Uzbekistan it only has a sentimental value. Because Dima does not think he loses money by giving this heirloom away.

> When this text was written the Soviet Union still existed and people was not allowed to have visitors because of the KGB, but now they do and they show their glasnost with happiness and with open arms as Rashidovs did. Edward and Joy travel as trailbreakers and they think that this is the right way of traveling for them. But it does not seem like that is the right way for them to travel. They do not know very much about the Uzbekistand culture and its hospitality. They learn something from Rashidovs which they use to feel superior. I think the Richardsons only want to be like trailbreakers so that they can feel superior because they do not know anything about the culture until Dima tells them and the strangest thing is that they do not believe on Uzbekistan’s hospitality later. Iin the end of the text there is another exmaple of the fact that the Richardsons only wants to feel superior: “Kind of you to take an interest, but to a knowledgeable eye…”. This is also something they have been told. The knowledgeable eye Edward talks about does not seem to be knowledgeable as he thinks. I think they realize that in the ending where Jake told them that the Bokhara is not a fake as they think it is. I think they discover that this is maybe not their way of traveling, and they decide to travel as normal tourists by enjoying the food and the sun.

>I think the message is to be grateful for the hospitality people show us. Maybe they give you something which does not mean anything to you but it is important to remember that this meaningless thing might hold an important meaning for the person who gave it to you. A Gift is a gift which comes from the heart no matter the value of it. I also think that it is important to give something in return, and not only to receive from other. Today it is very different from the various cultures what kind of things are valuable in a sentimental- or in a materialistic matter. I do not think the prejudice should manipulate people from the sanity like it has done with Edward and Joy who takes distance from Natasha and Dima.

Edward and Joy live in their own little ideal world and they consider themselves as being superior and more perfect than other people. Most importantly they are not as open-minded as they think because they have so many materialistic thoughts so that they do not know the value of the sentimental things.
