I will in this assignment analyse the language in The Island Of Dr. Moreau. First I will look at what kind of language it is. After that I will look at the linguistic effects the author use.

            When we talk about what kind of language it is, we have two options. The first is spoken language. Spoken language characterises by short sentences, few subordinate clauses, contractions etc. the second option is written language. Written language characterises by long sentences and periods, many subordinate clauses, hole sentences, correct grammar etc. In The Island Of Dr. Moreau we have spoken language. ‘’I heard something breathing, saw something crouched together close beside me. I held my breath, trying to see what it was. It began to move slowly, interminably. Then something soft and warm and moist passed across my hand’’ (p. 123 l. 8-12). In this piece we can see, that the author use long sentences, hole sentences and correct grammar.

            Now I will look at the vocabulary. It is does not matter what kind of vocabulary the author use. There are three kinds of vocabulary. The first is informal vocabulary. When we talk about informal vocabulary, it is words like gay, dude, geezer etc. The second is formal vocabulary. When we talk about formal vocabulary, it is words like adult, male, female etc. The last kind is neutral vocabulary. When we talk about neutral vocabulary, it is words like man or person. In The Island Of Dr. Moreau the vocabulary is formal. The author use formal and neutral words.

            The book is also very descriptive. The author uses many adjectives. The use of adjectives gives the reader a expression of, that he or she is be present. For example in this piece: ‘’That night, land was sighted after sundown, and the schooner hove to. Montgomery intimated that was his destination. It was too far to see any details; it seemed to me then simply a low-lying patch of dim blue in the uncertain blue-gray sea. An almost vertical steak of smoke went up from it into the sky’’.
