A painting by Giveto Aberragi hung among old panters as Goya and Rembrandt in the National gallery in London for ten days but then it was suddenly removed. The painting was a forgery; no painter with that name has ever excisted! The “painter”, a student by the age of twenty, Peter McNally, has later explained that it was meant as a jest. None of the visitors of the gallery, however, smelled the rat; on the contrary knots of interested people stood in front of the painting every day and admired this masterpiece from the Renaissance.
McNally, however, got cold feet and rang the gallery up. He had never imagined that the painting could have any artistic value; he had painted it in a few hours half a year ago and he had made it look sufficiently old by steeping it in a bath and then dry it in an oven.
Sir Phillip Hendy, the curator of the National gallery, turned pale and ordered the painting to be taken down. He tried to pilot to safety by saying to the press that it would have been worse if somebody had had the luck to smuggle a painting out of the gallery.
Sir Phillip saw the funny side of it and refused to deliver over the painting unless the painter himself showed up and proved that it was him who had really painted it. When McNally heard this he said this to the journalists: “I know that my university in Wales would like to have the painting, I, however, do not mind selling it to the National gallery if they are interested in buying it.”
