There is always a line by the till (cash register) in the supermarket where I usually do my shopping, because half of them usually are closed. And what is then the advantage of being able to find your groceries quickly (fast?) when you have to wait hours to pay? I often get upset and forget to be nice towards the cashier.
I recently decided to investigate the reason for the bad service. I spoke with the manager who said that the personel had to put up with lower pay, difficult working conditions and unsocial hours.
Furthermore he told me that the problem on a long term basis can be solved with the help of technology. In a few years a laser scanner will have replaced all cashiers. It is faster and more accurate; it gives the customer a specified bill and at the same time supplies a computer with information so the stack shelves can be automatically filled again. But it will become an expensive investment that the customer in the end has to pay, and it’ll carry fewer and bigger shops along, not to mention the increased unemployment among the clerks and the chasiers.
In the last couple of years we have witnessed the death of the local grocer's stores. Maybe we’ll witness the relatively small supermarket extinguish soon, not only in the inner city but in the suburb as well. That’s why I have decided to be a model customer in the hope that my supermarket will then exist just a little longer. I will never lose my head again because of the long line, and I will even smile to the cashier.
