Andrea Levy’s provoking novel ”Queenie” is the prologue to a British novel and was published in year 2004. The story takes place at the British Empire Exhibition in London a couple of years after World War I. The story is told by a first person narrator, a young girl by the name Queenie Buxton who is the main character.
Queenie and her parrents are white people who financially are doing very well. Queeni's father is a butcher. The family live on a farm and have their own employees. This family has never experienced other culture than the upper class, the one they live in. Two of the servants we hear about are Graham and Emily who are two young people who flirt with each other. They both are from lower class and work separated at Queenie's family. Graham's job is to help Quenni's father in the shed.
Later on Quennie meets a black guy which makes him the first black person she has ever seen. She has never seen a black before because she has been protected by her parrents. She finds him odd but quickly she realize that he can be a well-educated guy just like the white people.
And one of the themes in the novel is about prejudice against coloured people.
