This paper examines the women’s situation under the Enlightenment and in the 18th century in England. The study investigates the women’s roles in the novel Jane Eyre, to understand the view on women in the 18th century and draw a connection to the Enlightenment.
The paper includes an analysis of paintings and source criticism of society’s treatment and discrimination of women. The source criticism also was used to find cause and motive power for these conditions.
It is shown that the women roles portrayed in Jane Eyre can be recognised in the 1800th century in England. The result also shows that the new view on women under the Enlightenment has several similarities with the view that is shown I the character Jane Eyre.
