It should be noted that text two and text three are both written within a year of September 11, whereas text one is written three years after. Judging only by these three texts, there seems to have been a change in attitude towards airport security. The travellers are becoming more concerned about their privacy than about flaws in the security.
3)
One could argue that “Frisking the flight crews in front of the passengers is downright foolish. It only makes the passengers feel unsafe”. However, as Blake Morrison points out, the primary goal of airport security should not be to make the passengers feel safe, but to be safe. I believe that airport security is either/or. There is no sense in humiliating the travellers at the X-ray machines and metal detectors, if there is a giant loophole in the whole system. It might be very difficult and impractical to body search the ground-crew every time they enter a secured area, and that is a legitimate reason for not subjecting the staff to the same kind of security checks as the passengers.
But in my humble opinion, the passengers will feel much more unsafe when they read in a newspaper that there is an enormous hole in airport security.
