David Finchers movie, “Se7en” (Seven) is a thriller from 1995, starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacy etc. “Seven” has been kind of a role model for a lot of thrillers and horror movies since 1995.
“Seven” is about two detectives’ who is trying to catch a sociopathic serial killer, “John Doe”. John Doe justifies his killing with the seven deadly sins. At the end of the movie, John takes detective Somerset and detective Mills, out to the desert, where he reveals the last act of his plan, which involves killing Mills wife, in envy, and in the end making Mills so angry, that, in wrath, he kills him.
In “Seven” we meet a typical contradiction between the two good guys, we got detective Mills who is young, aggressive, spontaneous and white. On the other side we got detective Somerset who is seasoned, calm, thoughtful and black. And together these opposites are going to find the serial killer, John Doe.
John Doe is absent through the most of the movie, which makes the atmosphere extremely tense, because you don’t know who the killer is, it could be almost everybody.
The settings of the movie is unknown, but by looking at the tall buildings, the yellow caps and the dark alleys in the movie there is a chance that the movie might take place in New York. Through the most of the movie, everything is dark, but when John Doe turns himself in, it do not rain anymore, the sun starts to shine and everything is bright until John Doe gets killed by detective Mills. There is created a great contrast between the dark, claustrophobic and cold city and the desert where John Doe is taking the detectives to, where it is bright, open and hot. This could symbolize that when everything is dark, you are ignorant, which is the case is when the killers identity is not revealed yet and when everything is bright, you start to understand the context, it is almost like in cartoons, when the characters gets a bright idea, there appears a light bulb over their head, but in this case, the sun is bringing the brightness over the main characters heads. When Mills shoots John Doe, the sun disappears again and the rain and the darkness comes back, because now, no one knows what is going to happen to detective Mills.
The movie is a “must see” movie, it has everything; a great mystery which no one can solve until the last minutes of the movie, great acting, great effects and most important of all it has the most exiting ending, seen in a lot of years. But there is one negative thing about the movie, maybe it is just to emphasize the meaning of the city, but the movie is to dark a lot of places, which makes is hard to understand and see everything. Out of six stars this deserves five stars.
