Er der en´der vil tjekke denne for fejl!?
In Wordworths diary we find following narrative: “I wrote We are seven on a walk near by Alfoxden in the spring 1798”. It might seem remarkable that I wrote the last stanza first. I actually started with the last line.
When the poem nearly was finished I went home, read it aloud to Coleridge and my sister and said:” It will be nescesarry to add an introductory stanza and I would enjoy our small meal more if my work was ended”.
I explained, what I wished to express, and Coleridge gave me the line immediately: “A little child, dear brother Jem. I think it is a fine idea to use our friend James Tobins name – we all called him Jem”.
Later on Wordswoth wrote: “Jem got opportunity to read Lyrical Ballads in manuscript, and one evening he came to me with a serious face and said: “Wordswoth, I have seen the volume (of) poems, which Coleridge and you are in the point of going to publish. It contains a poem, which I pray that you will leave out, because it will make you ridiculous for ever. I answered, that I felt deeply honered because of his interres to my reputation as a writer and asked which one of the porms he ment. He said: “It is called We are seven. “No” I answered, “that poem I will not remove”, and he left me deeply disappointed about my refusal”.
In a later edition of Lyrical Ballads Wordworths changed in the mean time the first line of the poem into the now so well known “A simple child”, but it is doubtful if that was enough to satisfy James Tobin.
