Abstract
The study examines child labour in the years about 1800. It also sets out to find which consequences the industrial revolution had on the social conditions in the English society, and especially the consequences on the terms of the children during the period.
To approach this the study first examines an account of the progress of the industrial revolution and furthermore it deals with the social consequences of the revolution. They main focus is the scale of child labour as well as the social condition of the children. To achieve an image of the British society from a child’s point of view, the study furthermore contains an analysis of Charles Dickens’ novel “Oliver Twist” and how he describes the society, and maintaining special attention to chapters that concerns the terms of the children. In continuation of the analysis, the study also includes at brief survey of William Blake’s ”The Chimney Sweeper” and Blake’s attitude towards the society during the industrial revolution. The study also it contain a couple of relevant illustration with following comments and criticism. At last the study contains an evaluation of Charles Dickens importance as a critic of society.
The study shows that the revolution had both positive and negative consequences, and that it lead to a class barrier, which meant that the lower-class mainly suffered from the changes. Also the children had some very bad terms and lived under bad condition. The analysis shows that Dickens was very critical towards the society in his time, and that he takes the defence of weakest in society. Also Blake criticises society and attacks the church and the government through his lyrics. At last the study shows that Dickens was a important critic and he had great influence, because he had the publics attention. Dickens criticised the society and its institution, although he did not made any suggestions to improve the circumstances.
