The main character’s name is Lucy. She is drawing, while she is sitting in the detention room. She is drawing a heart. She thinks that the heart is rubbish, because she pushes too hard on the paper.
Lucy is telling about how she ended in the school’s Sin Bin. She hit a girl, whose name is Penny. Lucy is a grade student and she is not feeling comfortable with hitting Penny. Actually Lucy and Penny can talk good together, when they talk together, but Lucy’s new friend, Bethan, is pushing Lucy to hit Penny. So she does it because she wants to be good friend with Bethan who behaves adult and hard.
Lucy’s mom doesn’t let her wear make-up. She wears it and hid it from her mother. Before she is getting home, she scrubs the make-up away. She doesn’t want Bethan to know, that she’s not allowed to wear make-up.
Lucy is looking forward to the future, because she has so many things to worry about. Maybe all those worries will disappear.
Lucy’s school wants her to be their big success. That’s makes her feel warm inside.

A discussion of Lucy’s heart: She starts with drawing the arterioles and the heart looks like a futuristic city. It’s full of tunnels for people to slide around. Maybe she is having a dream of moving to a futuristic city. She is drawing her feelings in this heart.
The heart is a mess of really dark and really light. The dark side could be, that she have to hit Penny and she have to act like another person, so Bethan would like her. She is worried so it that’s also a dark side.
She also tells about her own heart, not the drawing heart.
Her mom tells her about how smoking can destroy her heart and maybe it would give her a heart attack. She don’t care, because she is doing like Bethan. Smoking is dangerous, but Bethan says the opposite.
She imagines how tar looks, so she drawing with black color on the heart.

When she was finished with the drawing, she would have another piece of paper. She found a soft pencil and started to recreate the heart. She concentrates and she wants to draw it accurately and good.

Discuss what themes that are being dealt with in this story: the battle between good and evil. Her mum says that God can see inside your heart and see the badness there.
There is a lot of emotions and confusion about her personality. She is a teenager with normal teenage-worries.
Friends are also one of the themes, because she tells a lot about the cool Bethan and Penny. She can see that Bethan is tough and Lucy want to be like her. She can see that Bethan act like adults by smoking and wearing make-up. Most of the teenagers are trying to be adults and act like adults. They want to grow up fast.

It’s also about the heart like an internal organ and what danger you can put your heart throw.
