"Section A

In The following I will give an outline of the use of information and communication technology as it is presented in texts 1 and 2.

In the first text, called “Don’t Want to Talk About it? Order a Missed Call” which is written by Matt Richtel, we are mainly presented for a new technology called Slydial, which acts as a voice mail. By using this new technology you can avoid “awkward conversations and confrontations”, and hereby you can avoid unwanted conversations. It is possible because Slydial is a medium based on one-way communication and therefore you are not “forced” to hear the receiver’s response. Furthermore the text points out that this new technology saves a lot of people’s time, because you, with the help of this medium can get to the point directly. This is also one of the reasons for using it: it is effective. Mr. Katz, who is the head of the center for mobile communications studies at Rutgers University, explains that people achieve a kind of safety, when they use one-way communication, because they pretend to be communicating even though they really do not do it. Hereby, he says that although this safety is a false safety, many people catch this as an effective method to communicate on. In this way this text mainly presents the new technology as a positive invention.

If we look at text 2, called “Sex, Lies and Internet”, we meet another opinion to the technology, mainly the Internet in general. Andrew Keen who writes this text illustrates the negative aspects of the internet. For example he claims that, the internet destroys many people’s reputations and with it many people’s lives. The possibilities on the internet make it more easier to publish other people’s identity and of course no one wishes their identity on the internet.
With an example of a girl called Julie he also points that ordinary people can destroy other peoples lives by publish stories which are not true by using the internet. This is also a negative aspect of the internet, presented in text 2.

2) In text 3 we meet Stuart Jeffries in a text called “Technophobia - the sign of a born leader”. His attitude to mobile phones and email is that everyone and especially people, whose role in life is to be on the top of the things, should know how to use the technological medias. According to him, they should be a role model for the rest of the world. He makes fun of the fact that John Mc Cain doesn’t have an email and the fact that Tony Blair didn’t have a mobile phone. He expresses his points of views in a very ironical way and therefore sometimes it is not clear what he actually says. An example of this is: “But is Mc Cain’s admission really damaging?” (line 20, page 6). Another example is “ “Maybe McCain shouldn’t bother to familiarise himself with the web and….”(line 28 page, 6). This way of expressing makes the test funnier to read and therefore we will always remember it.

3) In text 4, which is called “Review of Mark Bauerlein’s book The Dumbest Generation”, written by Lee Drutman, we meet Mark Bauerlein whose main point is that the internet damages the youth generation because the young people only use the internet for chatting and to read gossips in stead of using it for learning something new about the wide world. He clarifies this by saying that the American’s youth do not know anything about history and politics, because they do not make an effort to learn it. Bauerlein claims that the young people feel that the social life on the internet (Facebook and My Space) is much more important than learning something new.

Not all people will agree with Bauerlein. For example some people will adduce that many young people feel it easier to learn something on the internet, because it only demands a computer and an internet. To this place other people will maybe say, as Bauerlein, that the young people are not using the internet to get a wide intellectual horizon, but mainly to create social networks.

To this point, I think, the opponents will emphasize that the social networks can help the young people to be social and people who do not have a strong social network in the real life, outside the computer world, probably feel it more easier to get a social network on the internet.

Other people will maybe say that the fact that the young people are spending much time on websites like Facebook and My Space make them isolated from the outside world. They do not experience the real life and it have some consequences, later on in their lives.
Therefore there are both advantages and disadvantages with the ways of using the internet. Personally I will say: use it moderately. "

Nu har jeg ikke læst den særlig grundigt igennem, men studsede lidt over det her:

"His attitude to mobile phones and email is that everyone and especially people, whose role in life is to be on the top of the things, should know how to use the technological medias."
