Krigene mellem de to lande i det attende århundrede hade den konsekvens, at Canada tilfaldt den engelsk krone. Efter Americas uafhængighed i 1776 flyttede mange amerikanske kolonister, som forblev loyale mod England, nordpå og langde grunden til det engelskdominerende Canada. Undertruslen fra de stærke amerikanske nordstater dannede tre canadiske kolonier i 1867 en Confederation, som de øvrige provinser senere har tilsluttet sig. Så sent som i 1949 blev Newfoundland indlemmet som den tiende provins.
Flaget med ahornbladet i rødt og hvidt er af forholdsvis ny nato. Det erstattede i 1965 the Canadian Red Ensign og blev proklameret af Dronning Elizabeth II, da Canada stadig betragter hende som statsoverhoved.

The wars between the two countries in the eighteenth century had the consequens that Canada was assigned to the English crown.
After Americas' independence in 1776 many American colonists, who stayed loyal to England, moved north and laid the foundation of Canada which was English dominant.
During the threat from the strong American states of the north three Canadian colonies made a Confederation in 1867 which the other provinces have joined later. As recently as in 1949, Newfoundland was incorporated as the tenth province.
The flag with the leaf of maple in red and white is of fairly new date. In 1965, they replaced the Canadian Red Ensign and were proclaim by Queen Elizabeth II because Canada still look on her as head of state.
