 resumé

Alex were picked up by his mother at the school entrance. They drive home together in the car where Alex and his mother, Frances, chatting together. Alex asks his mother about the new dress she has bought, and she answer that she bought it for an opening of an art exhibition, and her father going to the evening (most likely the father is the artist). When they come home, eat a banana sandwich Alex, which leads him to speculate about his own age, and whether he really is getting too old to eat banana sandwiches.
During the meal, make Alex more clarifying questions to the mother of the party in the evening, including whom Frances should talk with and about what his father would be busy talking with gallery owner. After the meal a little later in the day Alex saves for his mother under her bed when he thinks she wants him to do his homework. Under the bed is Alex witnessed a conversation between mother and father and is hereby made aware that their relationship is perhaps not so fondly, as he naively've gone and imagined. He crawls out of bed and goes into the bathroom where he once again thinking about his own age. Here in front of the mirror, he decides that he, like the banana sandwich is too old for a toothbrush, which depicts a crocodile.

Characterization of Alex of Alex

At the beginning of the text we get the impression that Alex is still a child.
this example shows. when he picked up at school by his mother.
There are several things to suggest that Alex is still a child, it is seen through his childish comments and questions:

”We got a project. For Nature Class. I’m doing earthworms. Sam got beetles…I wanted beetles.” (ll. 13-14)

”Ms Swanson told me there are no such things as boy or girl earthworms.” (l. 17).

“What’s in the bag?”, ”What did you buy a dress for?” (ll. 22-29).

Throughout the novella examines Alex is also a development from a naive child, a more mature child.

He begins example. to have discussions with himself about whether he is getting too old for banansandwiches:

"Maybe he was getting too old for banana sandwiches." (Ll.49-50)

He also seems that he is too old to have a toothbrush with a crocodile, and would rather have an ordinary toothbrush instead.:

”...took down his toothbrush. It was green, a crocodile, yellow eyes. This too, he decided, was a child’s thing.” (ll. 169-170).

There are two main themes in this story:

The transition from child to "adult" (Growing up)

Marriage troubles (The Difficulties of marriage)

The relationship between the parents:

After having read the text, I would think that her mother, Frances, bought the new dress to impress her husband and get back to the love they had for each other.
Frances is a little uncertain in his attempt to impress him, but trying to make itself attractive and feminine for him:

" She reached down and picked up a lipstick [...] she put it on […] and Alex thought she was going to rub it all off, but she must have changed her mind: she put the tissue down, slowly. (ll. 101-104). While

France has made an attempt to make itself attractive, notes the danger it's nothing:

”But his father’s voice was the same as usual. “It’s very nice Frances. Lovely.” (l. 138)

The parents' relationship does not "genuine." Father notes, not really her mother:

”Who are you going to talk to?”, ”Oh, I expect there will be lots of people I ought to talk to.” (ll. 63-64)

Love is "disappeared" between the two parents and they have difficulty communicating:

”There was a silence. A restless kind of silence, like when you wake in the middle of the night and your room is full of no one.” (ll. 141-142).

The end:

The text ends with Alex is about to brush his teeth.
End, if we follow our interpretation of the title would mean that Alex here symbolically brushing their childhood away. He has earlier in the day eating a banana sandwich, the symbol of childhood, and this tasted him not really:

”Suddenly the taste in his mouth was sickly sweet [...]” (l. 77)

After opening to adulthood has been created, he now brushes the last remnants away.

Symbols:

Dress:
The dress could symbolize femininity, sexuality, femininity. The mother buys the dress to try to take her husband back to her:

Vernier Sadge:
Vernier Sadge can be seen as a symbol of what a 'real' man is in Alex's eyes. This also shows a bit about Alex's childish thinking:

”He would be tall, with a big thick neck, and glasses, and a moustache like a nailbrush. He would have big eyes behind the glasses, with eyelids at a sly half-mast. He would smoke cigars.” (ll. 3235)

Banansandwichen:

Symbol of childhood

"There’s something about banana sandwiches, sweet and soft, at made heaven think of baby food." (Ll. 48-49).
