Whether your interests are in the arts or shopping, arschitecture or royal pageantry, history or simle sight-seeing, the capital is bound to offer enough to fill up your days - or weeks. Here are the centres of goverment and of law, the great financial institutions and the principal homes of royalty.

It is even possible to get away from the crowds - tunr off many a busy thoroughfare and you will find yourself in a quiet square, rural-seeming park or leafy courtyard where time seems to stand still.

Greater London was established in 1965 as an administrative unit covering the London metropolis. It was not defined aas a country but had a two-tier structure, with the lower tier being the London boroughs. Following the abolition of the Greater London Council (GLO) in 1986 the boroughs became single-tier authorities, but Greater London was still widely recognised, especially for statistical and mapping purposes.
