The short story evolves around the Indian girl Sumita, who is going to marry Somesh. The story starts off with an in media res, where Sumita’s family is preparing Sumita for Somesh and his parents because they pay them a visit. The events in the story is very similar to flashbacks, but not in that extent, because when some read the story, they might say that it is al lot like the events have already taken place, and she thinks back, standing there in front of the mirror with the almond-colour clothes, and she thinks back about the things that had already occurred.
At the beginning of the story she feels insecure and timid, that she is going to marry Somesh, and she is clearly sad about the arranged marriage and that she can’t choose independently whom she is going to live with for the rest of her life.
When the story drastically changes, she is suddenly living with Somesh and his family. At that time she is living surprisingly happy without her parents, with her husband and parents-in-laws in the United States of America.
In that short time Sumita had with Somesh, she is felling secure and is getting high hopes for her education, because Somesh said that she is able to get an education, and was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen (p. 179 l. 35-43). Somesh said something to her, which she were never been told by her parents, because they said that it would get her arrogant and haughty.
“ In the mirror a woman holds my gaze, her eyes apprehensive yet steady. She wears a blouse and skirt the color of almonds ”, page 183 line 7-9). One could say that the themes of this story would be the fight for the modern woman versus the conservative/traditional woman, as Sumita changes as a traditional, serving tea woman to a modern independent woman.

Du må have et rigtigt lorteliv. Det er måske derfor, at du spiller dum over nettet. Ha' et godt liv. Farvel!
