My Son the Fanatic

Some people find it complicated to be an immigrant if they have another religion than the country has. For example can it be tricky for a Muslim person to live in the western, because they have another religion and culture. Someone decide to hold on their own custom and another want to leave their old custom and live like the residents. Some young boys who do not feel they accept from the people choose to make trouble in the country. It can for example be crime or sell drugs.
“My Son the Fanatic” is a short story by Hanif Kureishi from 1997. It tells about a relationship between a son and his father.

We hear about a man called Parvez who is immigrant in England. He works as a taxi-driver, and that he has done for 20 years. He grew up in Lahore. His relationship to the Koran is very bad because he breaks a lot of rules. Parvez is not religious and we know that, when he says that he loves crispy bacon and you can read about it on page 197. He also drinks alcohol, even though he has to work. So I think that he has an alcohol problem. He has a very good relationship to Bettina, in the text on page 195 they say that he can talk with her about things he would not be able to talk with his wife.

Ali is Parvezs son. He is more religious than his father. Ali prays five times a day. His close relationship to Islam is very strong. On page 198 lines 12-14 & lines 18-20:“The law of Islam would rule the world; the skin of the infidel would burn off again and again; the Jews and Christers would be routed.” And it makes him think to go in war: “My people have taken enough. If the persecution doesn’t stop there will be jihad. I, and millions of others, will gladly give our lives for the cause.”
But Ali has always been “the good son”, a great student etc. But a day everything got out of control. Parvez has worked all the time to try to pay for Ali’s education as an accountant. “He had always been aware of the pitfalls which other men’s son had fallen into England. And so, for Ali, he had worked long hours and spent a lot of money paying for his education and accountant. He had bought him good suits, all the books he required and a computer. And now the boy was throwing his possession out!”. Parvez sent Bettina to talk with Ali. But Ali do not want to hear at her, because she has an affair with his father. On page 201 is Bettina talking with Ali: “You say that he loves me?” the boy said. “Yes!” said Bettina. “Then why is he letting a like you touch him like that”.

Ali started to be the quiet son who was good in the school and so on. Parvez was thinking that his son is the fanatic, because Parvez did not have any contact with his son anymore. The title in the beginning it refers to Ali and that his obsession to his religion seems impossible to Parvez but that is because Parvez and his wife left the religion for long time ago. But at the end, you get the impression that Parvez turns out to be the fanatic, he can not leave his son alone, he can not accept his believe, and then it drives him to hit his own son and it makes him crazy. “The boy neither covered himself nor related; there was no fear in his eyes. He only said, through his split lip:”So who’s the fanatic now?”

I think that the team is the relationship between a parent and their child. And that a child needs his parents. Sometimes a child scream after help, but the parents are not aware for it, and then the child can makes stupid things so the child can get attention.
