Hej.
Vil nogle rette dette hurtigt??
In the article “Immigration: The Case for Amnesty” by Nathan Thornburgh, he puts up a lot of ques-tions about these aliens, how the American population should deal with them and how this has be-come a huge problem. The immigrants are taking over the economy, and how the population is am-biguous.
The genre of the text is an article. The writer of the text is writing to the average American popula-tion, where he tries to make a wakeup call, which shall lead the American people to take some kind of action, and initiate to have a meaning about the debate about illegal immigrants. His message is built on that the amnesty is the only solution. His way of writing through the article is quite neutral, but at the same time he brings the text some small pieces of humour. He is arguing for that the Americans are in doubt about what they should mean about amnesty, and he means that the politics are using this against the population. Thornburgh claims that not only would an amnesty policy be beneficial to the economy, but that the majority of U.S. citizens would back a bill that grants some form of amnesty to illegal immigrants.
Thornburgh relies on personal interviews with people of the small town Beardstown, to help the reader feel more connected personally to the topic of illegal immigration, but the personal opinions of a handful of people on the street do not make an effective argument for the case for or against amnesty. A statistic cited from a poll was more effective in convincing that U.S. citizens are not in favor of returning immigrants back to their country of origin (mainly Mexico) without any pathway for return.
Thornburgh also uses the example of Beardstown as a growing and prospering town with an increasing illegal immigrant population. Although Beardstown may be an example of growth and integration, the author doesn’t cite sources for his information like labor and wage statistics or social services programs.
He is using his pathos through the girl Fernanda. She is an immigrated girl with high qualifications and has achieved some good grades at school. But now she is trapped while her parents are sent back to Mexico, and by this terrible act she is a soul provider. This situation is making it hard and difficult for her to be in charge of doing her school, which leads her to work for the money.
Ethos he is using about himself, where he talks a bit of himself and his childhood in Beardstown. He is giving some examples about that 72 % of the children are Spanish or Mexicans in the kinder-garten in Beardstown, and how the aliens are hiding when the authorities comes at visit.
Thornburgh is writing the text in an objective and a subjective way. He is trying to hold the sub-stance very objective, but sometimes it leaks, and turns over in the other track, subjective. By this his use of his own opinion manages to shine through in some phrases. He is using an example which can be found on page 1, sentence 13, where it says “Whether you fine illegal aliens or stick them in English classed or make them say a hundred Hail Marys” Here we see how he brings some humour into the text, but still it is clear what he is very critical towards the politicians and their explanations.
I understand, and I can see what Nathan Thornburg is aiming for, and he is also describing the most for the problems regarding the immigrant situation in America today. It’s hard to reach an agree-ment between the American population and the politicians. This is a call, a call which should lead the population to take action soon, or they will never have a chance to stop this never ending flow of immigrants, whom are crossing illegally across the border.
In my opinion Thornburg fails to convince me based on the experiences of one town that illegal immigration is not detrimental to the whole of the U.S. economy.
På forhånd tak!
