Collins returned back to Ireland in 1916 to take part in the uprising in Dublin.
The Easter Uprising
The Easter Uprising was a big event in Ireland´s recent history.
On the morning of Easter Monday 1916, 1.250 started a rebellion that Patrick Pearse had told that it will be suicidal mission. They set out to take one of the most prominent buildings in Dublin.
The General Post Office is now most associated with the rebels- thought if they failed to capture the building- the castle which served as the Headquarters of the British administration in Ireland.
Before Patrick Pearse would like to capture the building, he was pretty sure that the rebellion would fail, but this was what he said to his mother:
"The day is coming when I shall be shot, swept away, and my colleagues like me………Willie (Pearse)? Shot like the others. We’ll all be shot."
But Michael Collins was not a big part of The Easter Uprishing, but it was here Michael begun to got some influence.
In 1919, he became head of the Irish Republic Brotherhood, a position of great influence and control, and Minister for Finance in the Dáil loans in Ireland and the United States.
When DE Valera went to America, Collins became “leader” of the entire revolutionary movement.
His key role was that of director of organisation and intellegence for the Irish Volunteers (soon to become known as the Irish Republican Army).
Collins went to London as part of the delegation that negotiated and signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921. ( The Anglo-Irish treaty, called Articles of agreement for a Treaty between Great Britain and Ireland. It was an agreement between the government of The united Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and its about the Irish War of Independence).
DE Valera is not happy for the Treaty, because he had dreamed about he could got the whole state free. DE Valera would like to start a civil war. But the civil war broke never out.
While on a tour of duty in his native west Cork he was killed in an ambush at Bealnablagh, near Macroon.
To this day no-one is sure what happened or who was the evil person to kill him.
Collins was perhabs the outstanding talent of the Irish revolution, combining formidable powers as administration, soldier, negotiator, counter-intelligence chief, and ruthless terrorist. He has since become recognised as a founding father of Irish democratic independence.
