Hey, vil i ikke være søde at kigge denne oversættelse igennem for fejl?!
It is a known case that Bernard Shaw were seen by his own fellow countrymen as the wittiest writer of his time and there were told many funny stories about him. It was earlier custom that gentlemen wore evening clothes at the theatre. One evening Shaw preferred to meet in a velvet jacket at one of the theatres of London. The doorkeeper stopped him with an offended look. “What’s the matter?” the writer asked. “Is it my velvet jacket?” The doorkeeper nodded. “Well,” Shaw declared, “then I’ll take it off.” He did it and were about to seize his seat in shirt sleeves. “You can neither do that,” the doorkeeper exclaimed horrified and tried to stop the odd gentleman, who now said with affected anger, “Maybe you do believe that I wish to take even more clothes off?” From that evening on he was allowed to walk uninterrupted with his velvet jacket.
When lady Randolph Churchill once invited Show to lunch, he telegraphed back, “That could certainly not occur to me. What makes people attack my famous habits in that way?” But this time Shaw suffered a defeat. The ready-witted lady answered, “I don’t know anything about your habits. I don’t hope that they are as bad as your manners.”
Shaw had become his fellow countrymen’s privileged jester who would say or do something funny at any occasions.
