Once, as a girl had been taken to the zoo for a birthday party, and the thing she liked the best was the formicary, where the ants lived their busy lives oblivious to the world outside. “It’s like a real little world all on its own” she said. Its many years ago now, and during that time there has been a reversal in Marjorie’s mind and attitude to life, now it’s the people who are like ants. It hardly ever happens that Marjorie meets other people face to face, due to the fact that she suffers from agoraphobia. Marjorie is completely possessed by fish and their world in an aquarium. She has many species of fish and care a lot about them all, but her favourite is the piranha “Russ” which is her pride and joy. It soothes Marjorie to observe the fish gliding from the one glass wall to the other; their world is so peaceful and bright. A guy named Mick, who is a yob, was sent out by the social services into a community scheme and Marjorie was terrorised physically by him. One day he suddenly appears in her apartment bruised, and he demands a drink. Marjorie agrees and makes a glass of whisky, but she uses some of her agoraphobia pills. A few moments after he has finished his drink, he is asleep, and she takes his hand and puts it into the tank where the piranha waits with frenzy and the water turns red.
