Auggie Wren´s Christmas Story
The novel “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story” is written by Paul Auster. He has chosen himself as a narrator to tell his story through.
The story is about Auggie, he works in cigar store. One day he looks across a review of one of Paul’s books, and recognize him on the photograph, which accompanied the review. And then one day he asks Paul’s to see the photographs he has taken. Auggie shows him 12 identical photo albums. At first Paul don’t know how to react when he sees the photographs, because they were all the same. They were just taken in different days and in different years. So, instead of commenting the photographs, he just keeps turning pages, until Auggie ask him to slow down, or he won’t manage to see anything. Little by little he begins to notice all the details, like the changing angles of the light as the season advance and the rhythm of the different days.
Earlier the same week, a man ask him about he is willing to write a Christmas story for the New York Times. Peter tells the man to give it a try. But then he found out that he didn’t know about writing about short stories on commission and that he didn’t know about Christmas at all, and felt in deep panic, and was close to give up. But Auggie offered him to tell the best Christmas story, as well true, on the condition if Paul buys him lunch.
When I heard the story Auggie has told Paul, then my first thought was:” Auggie must have been the man, and its how he got the camera”.
Auggies story was about a boy who has stolen from a mans store, and he dropped his wallet, when he ran away. The man wanted to call the police, but he felt a kind of sorry for the kid, and wanted to give him back the wallet. It kept delaying and finally on Christmas day he decided to return the wallet. A blind woman opened the door and thought it was her grandson, and the man couldn’t disappoint the old woman, so he played the “game” too. He stayed for dinner and one time he had to pee so he excused himself and went to the bathroom. Here he found a lot of stolen cameras, and without thinking he took one of them. When he came back he found the old blind woman sleeping.
After he had stolen the camera, he wanted to return it again, because he felt bad with what he had done. But when he left to return the camera, someone else have moved in there, perhaps the blind woman was dead!
The thought that the blind woman’s grandchild came to visit her on Christmas was enough to make her happy. In this story the lie turns to be positive. Normally we find a lie with something negative, but here it’s the other way round. If Auggie hadn’t lied to Granny, she properly might have spent her last Christmas alone.
I would say, that the theme in the story is, that it’s not nice to know the truth always. Some times you have to lie to please people and make them happy.
