Hejsa jeg ville være meget taknemmelig hvis i havde lyst til at bruge lidt tid på at rette grammatiken i mit stil? :)

“Cal” I

Cal Mc Cluskey is a young man, who is 19 years old and unemployed like many other youngsters in Northern Ireland. He got a job at the local abattoir by help of his father, but he throws it away after just one week because he couldn’t stand the smell, and he is now receiving the dole (later he is offered a job at the farm of Mortons). Cal and his father Shamie are the last Catholics left in the protestant estate which they live in.
He spends the most of his time in his room, listening to Rolling Stones and playing the guitar to drown the silence. To kill the time he sits and curses at himself in a mixture of French and English.
Cal has a low self-esteem after he throws his job at the abattoir away and gets unemployed again.
Cal lost his loved mother in an age of 8; he misses her very much and has many good memories of her. As a child, gave Cal himself love bites because he missed his mother so much. Living alone with his father creates some conflicts.
Cal has been involved in some illegal activities concerning the IRA. He took part in a murder of a policeman Mr. Morton, who was a protestant.
He has been dragged into the IRA and it’s for life. When you are in, there is no way out. He is forced to help his so called friends Crilly and Skeffington with hold ups, he wants to get out, but deep inside he knows it’s impossible and risky. Cal is not consistent in his choices and therefore he is still involved.
Cal is very oppressed by his conscience and guilt, to forget his sin; he very often goes to sermons in the Catholic Church. Cal has fallen in love with the widow of that man whom he participated in killing, which is a mortal sin. He has an urge to make it up to her again and this is Cal’s way to atone his sins. Cal confessed formerly once in a while, but now he hadn’t confessed in a year due to the fact that he knows that his sin is unforgivable.
Cal is a kind of obsessed of the widow whose name is Marcella, he constantly thinking about her and visits her at the library where she works. Cal is offered a job at the Morton farm and he accepts immediately, it’s a new start for him and it haves a purifying effect on him.

Marcella Morton is a catholic and has her origin in Italy. Since her husband Mr. Morton was murdered, has she been living with her little daughter Lucy in the farmhouse of her parents in law. She is working at the library to get out of her boring life at home and to make new social contacts.

The relationship between Cal and Marcella are not a relationship yet, the first time he saw her at the library he got frightened when he recognized her. After a while he got attracted to her and he got some kind of obsession. He is frequently borrowing tapes and books just to be around her and talk to her. The first time she really notices him, is when he carries groceries for her. Cal cares a lot about Marcella, but she doesn’t care about him in the same way, for her he is just the boy who carried her groceries.
There are some incidents at the Catholic Church, Marcella’s eyes skims over Cal, but she pretend not to see him and ignores him. Later he is being pushed up against her body and he feels some kind of sexual attraction.

Skeffington is described as a 30 years old teacher and a fanatical IRA member. He likes convincing people of his ideals and what have to be done to win their freedom. He is willing to make sacrifices to achieve freedom and he thinks a few losses are cheap for freedom. Finbar Skeffington is the pathetic “leader” of the little group consisting of Crilly, Cal and him. He takes the decisions, Crilly does the dirty work and Cal is forced to participate often as driver. Skeffington don’t like to get blood on his hands, a symbol of that is found at the match, where a drunken man stumbles in the mud, Cal helps the man ignoring the mud, but Skeffington doesn’t wants to get mud on his shoes. Skeffington’s role model is his farther and he still lives in his house.
Crilly is a Catholic and works in the abattoir with Cal’s father Shamie and de does his job well. Cal and Crilly were in the same class at school and Crilly was a big lad for his age and he was teased by his big ears “ears like taxi doors”. Crilly has some psychopathic traits, he is very violent and callous, and he does the dirty work for Skeffington, for instance he is the murder of Robert Morton who was murdered at his own doorstep. Crilly just obeys the orders, without thinking about the consequences and like taking another mans life.

Shamie Mc Cluskey is known as a good man, but it’s hard for him to show feelings and emotions. His first son died in a car crash, and the family couldn’t afford to attend the funeral in USA. Then his wife dies. Those two tragedies in his life made him in some way afraid of feelings. Every time he watches something with feelings and love in TV, he turns it off or looks away. Shamie refuses to leave his home, and because of being a Catholic, he’s being threatened by the UVF, but Shamie is very stubborn and would rather die than losing his dignity.
His relationship to his son is not good, they are becoming more distant. Cal has bought a bolt to his door to get some privacy and lock Shamie out of his life. When Shamie comes home from work, they eat dinner and watch TV and don’t talk much to each other. Shamie tries to give Cal love, but he rejects. When they receive the 2nd warning from UVF, they are becoming closer than before. One of the reasons for the distance is the generation gab between Cal and Shamie. Shamie is a little embarrassed about the fact that Cal was not able to do the job at the abattoir, but he doesn’t show it.

The preacher is a quack and a symbol of religious faction who exploits the situation in Northern Ireland to their own advantage. His Adams Apple is formed like a vulture, and a vulture is a scavenger and eats carcasses.

The abattoir is a symbol of the situation in Northern Ireland. The blood and carcasses symbolize the killings and violence taking place in Northern Ireland.

The IRA is presented as a terrorist group who are willing to make sacrifices to achieve freedom. You get the impression of a large network of small groups who work individually without knowing each other, that’s a very effective way because they are very hard to track down.
