Rosa L. Parks was 40-years-old when she one day in 1955 sat down in the back of a bus in Montgomery on her way home from a hard day’s labour as a sewing machinist in one of Alabama’s textile factories. At the next bus stop, a white man came down through the aisle of the bus that was filled with travellers. The local laws back then - in 1955 - required not just that the blacks should sit in the back of the bus, but also that a Negro should get up, if a Caucasian demanded the seat. This was what now happened. The small black woman looked up. “No”, she said. The bus driver with authority meddled in the incident and demanded the same. “No”, Rosa L. Parks said. When two officers from Montgomery’s police department arrived to the scene, they handcuffed her, escorted her to the police station, incarcerated her and finally they imposed her a fine of 10 dollars. “No”, said Rosa L. Parks.
