“Puppet”, is a photograph taken by Jeffery Muir Hamilton, and this photograph illustrates the chain of command within a household. The high-handed woman (the mother) in this photograph embodies the role as the puppeteer while the substandard child (the daughter), is the miniature puppet version of the puppeteer.
The puppet is clinging to the puppeteer with powerlessness, and the ironic detail in this photograph is that the child also got a small puppet, which she instructs.
Both the dominant woman and the child have identical posture, clothes, jewellery and they are both barefooted.
One could therefore imagine that if the woman instruct the child inadequately, the child would treat her doll poorly ass well. This hierarchy within the family illustrates the circle of life, if a mother nurtures her daughter poorly, the daughter will probably do the same.
Ursula Hegi has written an short story, “The Juggler” which also deals with the element of motherly influence. The difference between the photograph and the short story is the age, Zoe is a woman who is independent, she has throughout her life been the adult in her family. The child in the photograph has a dominant instructor who can easily influence the child, contrasting Zoe’s mother who is a “child” herself.
Unlike the photograph where its clear that the woman is dominant and the child is second-rated, the narrator in the short story has put herself and Zoe on the same footing which is the main difference between Jeffery Muir Hamilton’s “Puppet” and Ursula Hegi´s
“The Juggler”.
