Jeg har super svært ved at få den rettet!

A)
Daniel’s skyline is about a boy called Daniel who is retarded and lives with his mother. Daniel’s father left him when he was 2 years old. The only relationship they have is receiving postcards from him. The story is told by his mother. Daniel’s mother is at home, looking through some of Daniel’s old stuff. Looking at the stuff makes her think of what the future is going to be like. She sees a darker future. Daniel is obsessed with skyscrapers, and dreams that he one day will come to New York and be on the top of World Trade Center. Daniel is convicted for assaulting a young woman, and therefore he is sent to an assessment center, where they will examine him and decide what is best for him now and in the future. Daniel’s mother visits Daniel at the center, and she tries to talk to him, but Daniel only shows very little interest in talking with her.
Daniel’s mother tries to tell him that he only was curious about the woman, but without any luck. Mentally he disappears. It happens when every time they discuss. But it doesn’t please him and therefore he ignores it. But Daniel starts talking about living on a skyline in New York. His mother has a hard time accepting that he has mistreated a girl and while she still tries to convince him that he only was curious.

B)
The story’s title could maybe have a two meaning. The first is that “Daniel’s skyline” could be understood as a dream of New York’s skyline. He received a postcard with a skyline, probably the one the title mentions.

The narrator is Daniel’s mother. We don’t know her name. The story is told in third person. It is from the mother’s point of view. But because it’s the mother who is the narrator, we get limited knowledge about Daniel. For instance the mother does not really know anything about her son’s thoughts and happiness. And that is the problem, no one really does. But sometimes she really thinks that her son is normal. Only in a few split seconds does she recognize that her son has this disease. Daniel’s mother is the only one who has a humane look on his condition. For her it is hard to se him at this center, and she worries a lot about him. But even does she wish he could have a better life than the one at the center.

There is a possibility that Daniel has no control over his actions. Therefore Daniel was placed on a center after he attacked a young girl. On the center where Daniel is, they try to find out if his behavior can be changed. They see Daniel as a possible threat to the society, if he could think of doing violently actions again. They will find out if he is one of those kinds of people who are better of with being placed at a center, where he can do no harm. Because of Daniel’s mental condition, he’s not able to have a regular life and to be a part of normal society. Because he’s retarded, it is a fact that he never will be able to confront and understand what is going on around him, and therefore he often escapes into his own daydreams.

It is hard for Daniel’s mother to let go of her son. The reason for that is that she knows that Daniel’s mind never has developed bigger since he was a little child. That has resulted that he’s not able to take care of himself and live by himself. The problem Daniel’s mother has is she can’t let go of her strong feelings about Daniel when he was a child. But even she knows that he will grow up and change, she still wants to maintain things like they were.

“He has not slept in that room for some time, but I have changed nothing.”(37-38)

She keeps his room as it always has been like. Here we see the mother escaping reality. But she is not the only one who escapes from the reality. Daniel’s father also tries to escape from the reality. When Daniel was 2 years old, his father ran away. Since that day they haven’t seen him. Sometimes Daniel receives a postcard from him with pictures on. On one of the postcards Daniel got there was a picture taken from a skyline.
Maybe one of the reasons the father left them, was because he wasn’t ready to face the reality. The reality of having a retarded child and having a family. But Daniel’s mother was actually happy about being alone with Daniel. Maybe they had problems with living together and bringing up Daniel, but it could also be that the father realized that this was just not what he wanted.

In the end of the story Daniel get compared to “King Kong” by her mother. King Kong and Daniel are from our point of view a problem and as a threat towards the security of society. They both want a girl, but they can’t have them. It has nothing to do with them inside, they are probably friendly.

Hej udfra det jeg har læst, skal du starte med at sætte flere kommaer. Og så skal du måske læse den igennemigen, men denne her gang skal du være meget kritisk overfor dig selv. Det er ihvertfald en start :)
