The short story “Sand” by Susan Hill is dealing with the very insensitive and dominating mother
and her very abnormal relationship towards her children. After the death of their mother the
children are going through her things, and the memories which start to arise remind them of their
fear of her. They remember how selfish and cold hearted she was and how unwilling she was to
make herself uncomfortable for their sake. Questions which they never dared to ask her are left
unsaid because of her death. It is, however, very unlikely that they would have asked her anyway,
since they where scared to death by her. The only time when the children see something which
makes them think of their mother as a human being is the time when they are on their way home
from the beach and they pass a crying child. The little boy is crying because sand has blown into his
eyes. Normally they would have been told to look the other way, but to the children’s surprise their
mother stops and cleanses his eyes with a handkerchief which is very dear to her. The whole
situation makes them very uncomfortable and scared. After the episode the children are wondering
whether she will change, after having showed such care, or not. To the children’s disappointment
she remains the same, and they never mention the incident with the little boy again.
