"The sand"

B:
Being a parent can be a joy, but it's also a demanding job. No parent is flawless. We all make mistakes. Even loving parents sometimes do things they do not intend to do.
Social heritage plays a vital role in our way of painting, so one could imagine that our parents way of parenting affect us the rest of our love.

In this British short story “Sand” which is written by Susan Hills and told by an all knowing narrator, we are introduced to a dominating mother, and her two daughters Clara and Lizzie who after their mothers death are looking back, and reliving their worst nightmare their mom. The relationship between the mother and her children was based on mistrust, and secrets.
The mother was of the opinion that she has never really fulfilled her dreams in life because she had to put her children first, and therefore her children should repay her one way or another.

It is impossible to give an objective description of the mother because the story is told from the main character’s point of view. The destination, ergo the house also contains living beings as well as dead ghosts from the past.

The main characters the two sisters Clara and Lizzie was demarcated, and pushed away from their mother, ergo it is not possible for them to show their gratitude, and recognition of the mothers sacrifices.

“resenting as she did what they had already and inevitably cost her”.

The reason for the mother’s behaviour might be one of the many tabooed subjects “there
were subjects they had never raised, questions they had never asked”.
The daughters was affected in such radical a way by their mother, that even after they were married and lived their own life they were still terrified by her.

“ Lizzie and Clara were afraid of their mother even after they had homes of their own”
This quote indicate the massive authority, the mother has had over her daughters in the past and after her death and how this has affected their lives.
The mother was very bossy and might have OCD. (obsessive compulsive disorder) . She made the decisions in the household, and she did not show her feelings towards her kids, which illustrate her as an impenetrable being.
She managed single handed to raise, two daughters without a male figure to support her which indicate that she also was a strong woman but unstable.
The mother might isolate herself and her two daughters, because of her own past.
The reader is told that the name of the mother is Mrs. Murgatroyd which indicates that she has been married before. Her significant other is not mentioned, maybe he is dead or had left them.
The mother do not want to have her mother as a active member of her family, so one could thing that the mother is raised strictly, and was isolated herself in her childhood, and therefore she continue this pattern of parenting.
One can only imagine the several reasons of her unpleasantness, towards her daughters. My personal theory is that her husband has left them, and her discontentedly childhood is the main reason for her bitterness.
The mother describe her father as an saint, the reason of this may be because his early dead, his could not see his daughters faults, and could not correct her flaws, therefore she sees him as an saint, and her mother as the opposite because she had shown anger for her daughters mistakes in life.

Susan hills title “Sand” is also significant, because sand is talked and brought up numerous times, in diverse contexts throughout the story.
Sand symbolizes different things for the people in this story, and this indicates this family not being a collective, but a group of individuals with different taste and views.
Lack of trust in a family, and hidden things is not memories, we wish to have when we thing of our childhood. The daughters might forgive their mother one day, nevertheless all their questions will never be answered and that will affect them, the rest of their life.

”They were afraid of their mother…There were subjects they had never raised,
questions they had never asked and now never could.” (l. 14-16)

Du har vel nok omtalt dem som søstre før?

Det lyder mange gange pænere uden!

and recognition of the mothers sacrifices. => mother's sacrifices MEGET vigtigt med ' da det er moderens offringer og ikke mødrenes???????
