Ellyday

Helen Oyeyemi`s Ellyday is about two siblings, Sophie and Elly. The story takes place in Elly´s bedroom one cold Sunday morning, four days before Christmas. Sophie walked into Elly`s bedroom, because she`s worried about her sister Elly, who is really skinny and she want to talk with her. Elly didn´t notice that her sister regarding her, while she lying on the sofa. While Sophie trying to figure out, how to ask Elly to pull her jumper up, Elly wants to listen to a cd. Elly would`t pull her jumper up and says to Sophie that she´s only going to get angry. Then they discuss about Elly`s weigt and appearance, and Elly says that she think Sophies problem is the fact, that Elly now is skinny like Sophie. After that Elly started to cry hideous and sank to the floor. Sophie telling Elly that Elly can`t talk or see properly, and how she can think it`s worth it, but Elly just answered that Sophie didn`t care, and have saw it happening. Sophie dropping from the sofa to the floor and crawling a little closer to Elly. Furthermore Sophie tell Elly that she`s actually is ill, need help and should talk to someone. At this moment Elly listen to her sister and ask her when it`s okay to die. Sophie get shocked and realised that she didn`t know this person anymore. Elly elaborate on her question about it´s okay do die before you´ve ever kissed a boy, or ever been loved, or anything like that. While Sophie was going to explained that it`s not okay to die, she just stopped speaking and stared brimming overwhelmed, because Elly had pulled up her jumper.

Sophie and Elly are teenagers and I suggest that Sophie is the oldest of them. Elly had a eating disorder and is very skinny and look like a scarecrow. She has fluffy brown hair and leaking, dead brown eyes. She`s mostly a silent girl, but when Sophie talk directly about Elly`s thinness, she`s going into self-defence. Elly had no control over her words and stumble haltingly over every each word that came out from her mouth. It`s painfully for Elly to speak clear and rounded, without a slur. She had pale skin and shaking hands because of her thinness. She wear baggy clothes and stuff like that so people can`t see how thin she is. Elly was fat before and have a serious psychological problem. She don`t feel well inside and ask qustions like how it`s okay to die and when it will be a shame. It seems like that Elly fells her failed from her sister, because she says to Sophie that she had saw what happening with Elly and that she didn`t care. Elly struggled with to stand up, talk and things like that. She´s very weak but unshakable, and would`t pull her jumper up for her sister. But in the of the story Sophie get her a surprise.
Sophie is the big sister, and she feel a responsibility for Elly. She`s very worried about Elly but also very straightforward in the language. She forced herself to sound irritable over Elly, as she had so many times before when they were younger, and she´d threatened to stop speaking to Elly if she didn`t do what Sophie said. Sophie behave like a bossy, like one who always told Elly what to do, to protect her little sister.

I don`t like the end of the story, because we don`t know what happened after Elly pull her jumper up. We don`t know how Sophie has react and why Elly had talk about when it was okay to die.
