At first we get to know that the nameless one is a fifth-year junior at UCLA, and is two years younger than Bruce. Bruce is 25 years old and is a writer for a television show. Bruce lives in Studio City and his wife is named Grace. Bruce is having an affair with the nameless one. They are seeing each other on the sly, because Bruce is married. Bruce has promised her to break everything off with Grace, but when she arrives at the apartment, Grace’s car is still there, so it is obvious that he has not made the move.
Bruce and the nameless one meet each other at the Zoo Thursday afternoon. There are a lot of elementary school children, holding hands in pairs. Expect from the school children the Zoo is so empty that someone could get murdered. The nameless one thinks that the animals are all tired and look sad, but Bruce contradicts her by asking what she expects, and points out that they are happy.
During their walk through the Zoo the nameless one thinks back to when she first met Bruce at a party. Three weeks into the affair she gets to know that Bruce is married, right after that Bruce leaves for a weekend trip to Florida. They pass the gorillas kept in cages. Bruce points out how the animal likes to be there, but she replays that they are captured and have no choice. She is hoping that Bruce will surprise her, but Bruce refuses to talk about them, and she realizes he is not going to leave Grace. They way back of the Zoo, they sit down on a bench and Bruce confides that he is an alien from a distant galaxy whose been sent to the earth to collect human behavior. They earth will destroy in the 24th century, but she have nothing to fear since she will be dead by then. Bruce kisses her hand, and ends by saying that for once he is telling
