PFT - Maria

Dear diary - welcome to Italy!

We arrived this morning at Hotel Azzi around 2 am. Birgitte, Kathrine and Susanne went to bed with what seemed to be the speed of light - but of course with all my stupid - almost autistic – before-bed-rituals, it was at least half an hour later before I finally was snoring in one of the envelope-beds…
After a peaceful night… perhaps to call it a whole night might be putting it rather strongly… So just a bit more definite: a few hours later we met with¬ the rest of the group, still digesting a nice breakfast, where I had been the only one daring enough to make myself a bowl of muesli with long-life milk (and as I write, I – very disappointingly - still have not turned luminous…).
Well, today we started out wearing long jeans and ¬cardigans. But even before we had reached our first destination – a great market place - the trouser legs had been rolled up and the cardigans had been replaced by T-shirts, summer tops and sunglasses – in other words; a perfect tourist weather! Birgitte and I got the giggles from watching the Italians who all walked around in quilted jackets, big hats and scarves in what to us felt like at least 23 °C – what is wrong with them? …I might be inclined to believe that it could have been us that there was something wrong with…hmm – maybe just according to the Italians themselves.
I did not find that many interesting things at the market, but I happened to buy an indeed very fake but also very nice little Gucci handbag..! Birgitte and I bought roasted chestnuts, 2 punnets of strawberries and a whole bag of peaches which was quite enjoyable to munch in front the others…

Ida is afraid of heights! After climbing up exactly 463(!) steps to get to the top of the great Santa Maria del Fiore, she revealed that she actually had been fighting with a great fear all the way up to the top! I did notice she was a little absent when we had to pull in our stomach’s to let people on their way down pass us by, but I myself might also had been a little claustrophobic at that moment… It was a great view on the top of the dome, and I think I got a great snapshot of Ida with wind in her hair, a great smile, the view in the background and both hands clutching the railing ?

We got the afternoon off so Almedina, Melani, Kathrine, Susanne, Birgitte and I headed for the first Italian ice cream that we came across, and with a little help from our map holder Kathrine, we found our way to the vantage point by the river Arno in front of the Ufizzi Museum.
We had such a great time sitting at the stone fence, eating ice cream and looking at the fine view and people passing us by. Apparently that particularly occupation attracted a lot of attention from the Italian guys..! We had all finished our ice creams when Almedina was still trying to fight through her own cone. When she found out that her belly could not contain the rest of her gradually melting ice cream, she offered the rest of us little bites on a spoon. Unfortunately I might have grown a little lazy by just sitting there by the river, so when I was offered a bite, I just bended over to grab it by my mouth – BIG mistake! Two Italian guys in a car just happened to pass us by in that very moment, so with loud whistling and various gesticulations, made it quite clear, that they had enjoyed the show. The girls seemed to have a great laugh about that one…

In spite of some small frustrations (hungry people actually can get quite irritable after walking around looking for a nice place to eat their supper for about 30 minutes!) we had some great pizzas in a restaurant filled with drunken Italian teenagers, who constantly walked into glass doors and – what should have been – singing weird songs in Italian…
We visited the Irish pub called “Dublin” down our street this night, because Birgitte and I for some reason promised each other to do so, when we passed it on our way to the hotel. Those Italians sure know how to make a really strong Marguerita!
