At my opinion, the 3rd verse sets the tone for the whole poem. Using a strong word like kill has made the poem formidable. But as I have mentioned earlier, the erotic mood of the speaker is evident, which somehow makes the tone slightly happier.
5)
The title is not especially revealing, but after reading the poem it seems to be the perfect title for it. In the poem, “the promise” is intentioned to be the promise that the speaker and her partner made. But it could also be the promise that you make when you are marrying someone; promise of living and dying together.
6)
In my opinion there are two big factors that motivate the couple to make the promise. The first one is the fact that the partner’s grandmother has been in a situation where death was better that life. The other factor could be the age of this couple.
7)
The speaker’s partner is afraid of ending up in same situation as his grandmother. He fears to be held alive against his own will. He has begun to suspect his wife for not supporting him and that she will let the doctors “win”, but she assures him she will take care of him nevertheless.
8)
“…if the ropes binding your soul are your own wrists, I will cut them”. Here the speaker is telling her partner that if he somehow ends up as his grandmother, then she will make it easy for him to die. The poet has used the expression “being bound by a rope”, which means that he will not be able to decide what to do with his life, and that he would not be able to die when he wish to. But I think that the partner is extremely inapproachable.
9)
The central theme in the poem is without any doubt the matter of euthanasia, which has both its pros and cons. In this poem we see the problem by two probably old people’s point of view. One can only thank the poet for shedding some light on what is really a very complicated subject.
10)
In my view, attitude of the poet is evident throughout whole poem. He uses a rather ordinary couple who have to make their mind up about euthanasia. He feels pity for the couple, and he is without any doubt for euthanasia.
