Howard is the main character in the story called “The Murderer”, written by Julian Symons. Howard is fifty-three years old, just became a widower. One of his values was he enjoyed sports programmes, like drama, family or anything historical. It inform us that this is a normal person, there is nothing strange about it, but on the other hand.
Howard is an extremely hygienic. Every night he washed up after eating and then used the vacuum cleaner. He never took food into the living room, for fear of leaving crumbs. This is unusual and abnormal behaviour to be so hysterical clean.

This weak character tried to understand why his wife was dead all this tragedy was still unreal. Howard’s son and neighbours tried to help him trough his crisis, but he rejects and resents their help, he thinks they are interfering, which I can understand. He is in a desperate situation and just wants to be left alone. At this moment, he is very sad, sensitive and angry.
Howard found some love letters and jewellery in a drawer, he never saw before. He learns of wife’s (Ellen) affair. He gets angrier and somehow betrayed.
Throughout the story, Howard repeatedly read the letters, he was confused about the letters and someway he was disappointed of his wife. Howard became lonelier than before, he had no friends and his only family was his son, which he was relieved to see him leave, after his visit.
Howard had a dirty dream about Ellen. He dreams about how she does it with everybody. In the beginning of the story, Howard met a young prostitute girl, this chocked him, because it wasn’t far away from his house, he never realised that it was near.
In the ending of the story, he had an obsession for small girls. He seeks after this young prostitute girl, it ended with he killed the wrong person. I believe that he may killed Carol Dempsey (One of the neighbours, that tried to help him), because the victim and Carol Dempsey was identical.

All those traits being extremely hygienic, confused and obsessed for small girls. He became mentally ill. I think he missed his wife to much to he can handle his own life, I suppose that, he trough his life was good as it was, until she was killed in an accident and found out that she was unfaithful. If you ask me, I think Howard’s life was already foiling apart before the wife’s accident, I don’t think he was happy, and I believe he wasn’t realized he was no longer in love with his wife, until the accident.
