July 20, 1969, was a big day for the American people. Not only because they simply were the first to ever walk on the moon (conspiracy), but also by “winning” their conflict with the Soviet Union.
The reason why I use ‘they’ as a synonym for the American people is because of their strong sense of community or their community spirit (especially during the Cold War and their conflict with USSR). At that time, they felt like they were on the top of the world, their technological and scientific competences was never to be surpassed (again) by any other countries, especially not the Soviet Union.
Prior to the Americans bustle in developing, the Soviet Union had already launched the first satellite to orbit the Earth (Sputnik 1, on the 4th of Oct.1957); they managed (for the first time ever) to launch a rocket that escaped the Earths gravity. Furthermore they were the first to ever get a rocket to the moon. That was a big technological era – and it was also what “pulled the trigger” once and for all, because the USA refused to be in the “rear end”. Also, the American public was afraid that maybe the Soviet Union (as a result of their technological developments) would develop ballistic missile that could carry nuclear bombs. In order to regain the technological superiority, the USA had to develop and achieve something even bigger than what the Soviet Union could produce. They simply had to intimidate the Soviet Union (and the world) – showing that their technological prowess was superior to that of the Soviet Union and that they were the biggest superpower in the world, capable to do everything they wanted.

Earths = Earth's gravity
Also, the American public was afraid that the Soviet Union (as a result of their technological developments) MAYBE would develop ballistic missile that could carry nuclear bombs.

Hvorfor ikke:
Also, the American public was afraid that, maybe the Soviet Union (as a result of their technological developments) would develop ballistic missile that could carry nuclear bombs.
Man kan godt henledes til at tro, at dit eksempel på "maybe"'s placering er en danisme?.
Eller tager jeg fejl?
