A quiet breeze was blowing softly through the leaves. The birds were chirping like they were singing a lullaby in the tree tops. I walked across the front garden over the dewed grass while the sun was blinding my eyes. As I reached the hedge I stopped and looked down at the electric hedge trimmer that I was holding. I sighed deeply. In these peaceful surroundings I did not have any reason to feel lonesome. From time to time I went out for a stroll with Raggy and we could walk along the meadow for hours. This made me feel relaxed and happy, but it did not fill the void in my heart. Lost in thought I began to cut the hedge in a circular pattern. Because of the metallic noise of the hedge trimmer I did not notice footsteps coming closer. I could tell myself that someone was calling for me. I turned around and spotted a young boy standing twenty feet away from me. He looked like Mr. Boone’s son Christopher who lived two doors down. I could not hear what he was trying to say so I turned off the hedge trimmer and asked him to repeat what he just said.
“Do you know anything about Wellington being killed?” the boy said without looking at my face.
“I heard about it yesterday. Dreadful. Dreadful,” I answered.
“Do you know who killed him?” He said and looked questioning.
“No, I don’t,” I replied smiling at him while I took off my yellow gloves.
Meanwhile the boy kept on informing about the murder. I listened very carefully and nodded my head to show that I agreed with him. For a while he did not say anything. Then he glanced me only for a minute and said, “Thank you for helping me with my investigation”. Right after this he turned his back and was about to leave.
“You’re Christopher, aren’t you?” I said before he even got the chance to turn around and take the small steps towards the garden gate.
“Yes. I live at number 36,” the boy answered.
“I see you every day, going to school,” I said and kept smiling friendly. I continued, “It’s very kind of you to come and say hello.” Christopher did not reply to this. “Even if it’s only because you’re doing detective work,” I said breaking the silence. He looked at the ground and did not say anything but thanks. I tried to make him speak with me but it was not that easy. He seemed to feel unpleasant talking to other people and he was probably a little shy. He was quiet a special boy and somehow he reminded me of my own grandson, whom I have not seen for months. They never got the time to come visiting me because they always have work to do.
After a while I offered Christopher to come in for tea. But he told me that he did not go into other people’s houses. Instead I went into the house to bring some out to the garden. After six minutes I was back but I could not find Christopher anywhere. I sat down on a chair and laid the tray with biscuits and tea on the garden table. The birds were still singing as the sun was going down leaving a stripe of yellow and pink clouds.
