In the name of the father

What happens if a bomb blows off and kills people? What will the police do if they do not have a suspected person to blame for the crime?
In this movie the police will not show the public that they does not have any idea of who the murder is. But what do you think the police would do in such a situation? They accuse an innocence to have done it.

In this story, which is based on a true story, we hear about the Irish man Gerry Conlon and his family and friends who get accused by being IRA bomber. They are all wrongfully imprisoned by the British government only because they need some scapegoats.and from here on we follow Gerry and his father Giuseppe lives in their prison. One of the main points in the movie is how the relationship between father and son develops. In the start of the movie we see the father who protect his son, according to Gerry maybe nagging on him, and the relationship is not very good between the two men. But in jail where they are imprisoned together, isolated from their murderer/rapist fellow prisoners, comes one-to-one communication very important. Over the years the dynamics of their love gradually changes, from bitter incomprehension to mutual respect and understanding. I think it is fabulous performed by Gerry when his father is getting weaker and the roles starts to switch. Gerry starts to take responsibility and are getting much more mature this also indicate that he is getting older. But at the same time as he is getting older so is his father. The father dies after many years of cruel confinement and the whole prison salutes him still he plays his roles beautiful. He shows how he is the morally strong father, troubled by his difficult son. After his death Gerry starts his fight for getting out of jail and justice. Later a female lawyer called Gareth Pierce finds evidence that proves their innocence and in court they all get their freedom back.






We do not hear much about the other actors because Gerry and Guiseppe have two very dominating roles.
The message in “In the name of the father” is how you have to keep struggling against the system and fight for your rights. You shall not let other people use you like a scapegoat and betrayed you. Gerry is not sure about his innocence at the start but when his father dies and he makes a tape to a lawyer who finds out that there are hope for him, he begins to believe that he can be free again.

Overall, there are both good and bad aspects in this movie. It is like you have two films compressed into one. The start and finish are terrific with the contrast between the two trials, but everything sags in the middle. The survival of Gerry and his father in prison is well constructed but I think that a lot has been skipped so you only get an overall picture of their struggle in the prison.
