”The War in Iraq and the mass media”
This paper examines the role of the American mass media in the war in Iraq. Early in the war a poll showed that the great majority of Americans thought that they decided to support the war because they were influenced by a media campaign against Saddam Hussein. American reporters “embedded” with the U.S. troops could present the war to people at home from the frontlines, and the paper discusses if they were part of a ploy by the Bush administration to get its own version of the war to the Americans. The role of the mass media and esp. the embedded reporters is examined through analysis and comparison of news items about the war shown on American TV channels and newspaper websites of different political conviction. It is concluded that public support in The USA for the Iraqi war was heavily influenced by media coverage, and that the embedded reporters played an important part in this.

“Science and Responsibility”
This paper examines the connexion between science and responsibility. On the basis of an analysis of the two short stories (Titles…) and the two poems (Titles…) from the fifties the question is raised whether scientists or other leading members of society can be held responsible for the consequences of their inventions. As part of the analysis rhetorical and stylistic effects are identified, and the statements of the four texts are compared. The analysis shows that there are clear similarities between the dilemmas dealt with in the four texts.
It is concluded that the responsibility for the consequences of scientific inventions cannot be placed exclusively on any groups or individuals, and parallels are drawn to the present situation in Iran.
