In five years the Dane Jacob Holdt bums around without any money and lives both in the poor ghettoes and among some of the riches people in America. He writes a book and makes a show about those experiences he makes during his journey.
Jacob’s show, American Pictures, becomes very popular all over the world. It has become so popular that it is shown at many American universities as freshman orientation. The photographs, which are the basis of the show, tell about the oppression of the black people in America and show people dieing in the middle of the streets. During his journey Jacob meets dozens of criminals. He also meets members of the Ku Klux Klan, but he does not see them as cruel people, he sees them as victims who need help.
As young Jacob was held down by a strong who-do-you-think-you-are attitude. Therefore he travels to Canada and hitchhikes all the way to South America. That trip makes him rid of his inferiority complex. Jacob begins taking photos when his father sends him a camera for his birthday present. He takes a lot of photos and tells everyone that he will be using them to a project. That is how it all starts. In 1976 he goes back to Denmark. He shows all his photographs to a journalist and at last he knows what to use them for. To the book the journalist wants him to write about America. And so he does.
