The text is about a young woman, Betty Dukes. Betty had a tough childhood. She came from a home where they were teaching what discipline was. When she was 10 years old changes her life totally. Betty came from an environment where black and white was mix and where the strong women was controlling.
Betty was born in 1951. Her family was very poor, and they lived in the town Tallulah in the state Louisiana. Her father was in the military and besides her parents worked in the fields with cotton. The life in a little house with eleven sisters could be hectic, so Betty and one of the sisters moved to their grandmother.
In 1960, Betty’s mother lost the economic support from the social authority, and they had to move. They moved to Pittsburgh and Betty’s life was going down. Betty ignored rules and promises. She came at an orphanage, and after that into a foster family in Sacramento, and then she just got into the criminal environment. When her sisters died, the family got together in Pittsburg again.
Betty looked for a job. She got a job in the supermarket chain Wal-Mart, which is gigantically department store in USA and other countries, as part-time assistant payment by the hour. Betty was happy for her job the first year, defiance the bad payment at 5 dollar. She got recommendation, but after some time she got full time and she got more payment. In 1998, she was promoting to customer service manager. Wal-Mart is opportunity for slightly people, which do not have a long education. Betty had seen, Wal-Mart as an opportunity to get a career and economic stability.
An October day 2007 Betty is telling Politikens in Copenhagen in Denmark her story, because Wal-Mart has a problem. There was sex discrimination. In 2001 did women earn 5.000 dollar less a year than men did, because women got the job lowest in the hierarchy. Betty Dukes started to realize that it was men who were promote and it was men who got best pay, and who was allowed to take the courses. Betty would do something, so she started with just talk about it, but after some time she started to yell at her boss. 8 years and 2 months after everything started, Betty was outside the borders at her first time.
14. August 1999 she was order to meet. They charge her for having to long lunch breaks, and the result of it is that she is being degradation, now she is checkout assistant. Betty will have the degradation annulet. She wants justice, and in 1999 and 2000, she tries to find a lawyer who wants to help her.
Shiela Thomas is a Lawyer, who is together with organisation lead a case about sex discrimination at the labour market. A lot other women has noted the differential treatment in Wal-Mart, so Betty signs and suit Wal-Mart.
2004 gave the Americans court system permission to lead a case. The legal part took 18 lawyers. However, today Betty is the symbol for the conflict
