People lived a peaceful village life in harmony with a naturally environment, up to the Industrial Revolution in the other half of the 18. century where the this quiet way of life changes. The smallholders were forced to sell their land to the landowners and gradually move in to the cities, where they often only found bad paid work in the factories.
The factories did also changed and with time it became bigger and bigger. The factory owner originally lived close to his factory and his working people, who he ruled over as another pater familias. During the 19. century the original factory villages developed to cities, where the factory workers lived crowded together in a miserable built houses, the so-called ‘’back to backs’’. The factory owners on the other hand lived elegant in their big houses, far away from the workers misery.
Gradually as the railway system spread itself in the 19. century, the middle class moved out of the cities. By this the english neighbourhoods with semi-detached houses aroused, as we know so well, and the cities were left to the poor workers and to the immigrants, who in the 19. century and the 20. century came to England from the Commonwealth
