Abstract
An increasing problem is the effects of toxic substances on the nervous system found in nature as well as synthetic compounds. Organophosphates belong to the latter; they are all either esters, amides or thiol derivatives of phosphor acids with different combinations of oxygen, carbon, sulphur and nitrogen, they are usually divided in three groups: the aliphatic, phenyl and heterocyclic derivatives. The organophosphate is inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase which degrades acetylcholin into cholin and acetic acid and thereby plays a vital role in transmission of nerve impulses. This inhibition makes an accumulation of acetylcholin in neuron-neuron and neuromuscular synapses or junctions. This causes rapid twitching of the skeletal muscles and at last paralysis.
The effects of neurotoxins on human health are a huge problem both for the society and for the individual. The governments have to make clear rules of the use of neurotoxic substances both industrial and domestic, it is all the more very important for the individual to be responsible and consider the individual use of neurotoxical substances.
