Good Girl

Religion has always been a reason among people to fight. All over history examples of great wars fought over religion finds its way to the surface. Just before I started this paper I saw the movie “kingdom of heaven” about the crusades to Jerusalem and about how religion combine people often stronger then nationalities.
This conflict, however quite smaller, is being fought in Northern Ireland, where both the Catholics and the Protestants wants to control the area.
The short story I’ve read is called “Good Girl” and it’s written by Marita Conion-McKenna.
The novel is published in 2001 where the huge battles of North Ireland still lay fresh in the back of the mind.
As I just wrote does the story take place in North Ireland, and is about al girl called Chrissy. She and her family come from a poor neighborhood and the entire family is Catholic. Because of the disturbances between the two religious fighting parts, people have been making some kind of religious ghettoes and very few are living along with some one with another belief.
Chrissy is a sweet and pretty, young girl. She works as a babysitter and it seams like she is quiet intelligent. She isn’t at all active in the fight in the country. Chrissy is as any other teenager fighting with her parents instead. She has a younger sister called Gamma. Chrissy is a role model for Gamma and she knows it. They have a good relationship and even though Chrissy thinks that Gamma can be too curious some time she still love her. Chrissy also have another sister called Anna, who is nineteen but very grown up.
The whole momentum of the story is Chrissys relationship to a protestant boy.
His name is Ian. They have met at a school debate and they have been hanging out since.
When the story takes place, is Chissy going out to meet Ian. He doesn’t show up where they have planed to meet. So when some girls that she knows comes and says that he is down by the river she follows them.
Down by the river the girls lock her in in a shed. They torture her because of her relation ship to Ian.
After some hours is she being find by her sister Anna and her boyfriend who takes her home. When she is lying in her bed recovering she writes a letter to Ian and tall Gamma to deliver it for her. When Gamma returns with the letter and tell that Ian is to busy to se Chissy, Chissys heart is broken.
As I mentioned earlier is the conflict between the two religions a big problem in North Ireland. And Chissy a Catholic girl to be dating a protestant boy is something that no one thinks is a good idea. We are being told that Eiiish dad is in jail for making a bomb. By that it is a possibility that Eiish dad had been a fighter for the catholic believers. Therefore is it very natural to think that Eiish not only has had a rough childhood but also has been taught that the protestant is the root to all evil.
Another reason for the attack on Chissy might be that Ian’s father has been Lawyer against several catholic fighters. For an example Eiiish dad, who has been set away for over ten years.
I do think that the strange part of all of this is Ian. Why is it that he does not show up to the date, and why don’t he want to se her afterwards?
He might not want to se her because of what happened to her. But then again why doesn’t he show up to the date. I don’t really think that he has been planning it. First of all because of the fact that he is a protestant and therefore he is probably not talking to Eiish. He might not even now her. I do think that the real reason for him not to except the letter is because he is going with his friends who he doesn’t want to know anything about the relationship. I must say that I was being scared as well if I wasn’t aloud to visit my girlfriend even though she has been beaten up.
Wish leads me to the title “Good Girl”. A good girl is in this situation a girl that does what she is being told, and what other people expect from her. I do personally think that Chissy now is aware about the conflict and that she from now on will do as expected.
