This paper analyses the two main characters Franz Biberkopf and Patrick Bateman in ”Berlin Alexanderplatz” and ”American Psycho – Tuesday”. The paper focus on the characterising the modern city person’s typical traits. On one hand we have Patrick Bateman who from the beginning is a typical city person, he is blasé, superficial, lonely and he is attached to a group and not to one particular person. One the other hand wo got Franz Biberkopf who has just been released from prison, he dosen’t have the typical traits yet, and therefore he finds the city very frightning, he is more like a rural person. But at the end of the story he has becomed a city person and now he knows how to act in the city.
Parallels and differences have been drawn to ”Augen in der grossstadt” and ”The Red Line” One of the main characters in ”The Red Line” is very similar with Patrick Bateman, they are both narcissistik and they both murder people. In the poem ”Augen in der grossstadt” there are painted a very negative picture of the big city because the citizens are blasé whereas in ”Berlin Alexanderplazt” it is described as a necessity that the big city person is blasé. Finally, the paper concludes that the big city person has the same typical traits in almost in evey big city all over the world.
