-----

Waiting for Godot is primarily about existentialism and hope. The play revolves around the two tramps Vladimir and Estragon and their pitiful wait for hope and salvation. The only thing they have left in life is a hope for something to come and rescue them. Save them from death and non-existence. Their hope is constructed as someone called Godot, who is supposed to come and save them. At least that is what Vladimir says. Waiting for this mysterious Godot gives them a meaning in life. Something they can look forward to and wait for. It is therefore possible that this Godot does not exist, but is just something the two tramps have invented in their minds, so they wont fall in to a life without meaning and hope.
Because the whole play is about waiting, the subject quickly becomes on how to pass time. It is very important for the two tramps that they do not get bored, because if they do nothing they are not sure if they exist or not, so to assure themselves that they exists they constantly tries to having some sort of dialogue. That is why they are afraid of the silence.
The main subject of their conversations is also about existentialism and their own existence. Since Estragon cannot remember anything, he needs Vladimir to tell him his history. It is as if Vladimir is establishing Estragon’s identity by remembering for him. Estragon also serves as a reminder for Vladimir of all the things they have done together in the past. Thus both men serve to remind the other man of his very existence. Estragon has lost his short-time memory, and Vladimir his long-time memory.
The pessimistic view of the play is that they cannot escape waiting for Godot, from each other or from their situation in general. The optimistic view of the play shows a range of human emotion and the need to share experiences alongside the fear from death; joined with the past, the present and uncertainty of the future.
