hehe

held og lykke

1994
Short story.
One of my best friends by P. G.
(very short plot): Relationship between two guys. We learn how it develops and ends.
Peter Goldsworthy. Who is an Australian writer and medical practitioner. He has won awards for his short stories, poetry and novels.

One of his famous short stories is “One of My Best Friends” witch he wrote in 1994.
It’s Fiction and it is told from the perspective of a first person narrator. The whole story is set around the narrator; we see through his eyes and “read” his thoughts. Detached narrator.
It makes the story more interesting I believe.

Although we here a lot about the 1st. person narrator I will not hesitate to say that the protagonist is in fact Willy. The narrator, whose name we don’t know, is a guy ,about 30y old married and has two kids.
He is a son of a Police officer and is a Police officer himself. He uses flashbacks. We get into the story when they both are ca. 15.
The main Character is physically strong and knows how to defend himself. Maybe it’s because he is a son of a cop.

He is unable to come to terms with his emotions.
He doesn’t know how to react when Willy in a moment of intimacy, with moist eyes tells him that he’s his only friend. He seems quite cold. Backup in line 25.Lucky for me, a trap went of just then. Rabbit whimpering too. Do the gutting- pretends he is a sleep. We don’t know his name. He can’t break away from Willy and feels sorry and takes pity on him. Middleclass home ( talking of legally adopting him)

Willy is a person of mixed black and white ancestry, a molatto, half Australian (white) and half AboRIginee.

Willy’s appearance and the way he looks are different from the other kids in neighbourhood. He has a flat nose, big, thick eyebrows and he is very thin.
Willy is a very lonely guy and doesn’t have contact to others. He often perceives as a victim (loser) and gets mocked by the other kids. Follows his very step. Feels accepted and has self confidence when he is 2gether with him.

Willy lives in a foster home were he has been teased and beaten.
His environment is so bad that he always want to run away from home. He will rather be at the narrator’s home than his own home.
Jump in the story. Future, 15y.

Identity may be contrasted with the notion of self. In psychology, identity relates to
Self-image- how an individual views him/herself both as a person and in relation to other people. In order to develop a healthy identity it is crucial to belief in membership of a nation, of a group and a place where you belong. Have Persistence over time. He loses that when the friendship comes to a halt when he is sent to the reform school. He loses the only one to whom he could confide in. What determins which past or future being is you. He had build him up and then left him out to dry.
The story takes place in a small town, in the country in Australia, in a society with a lot of discrimination which brings my mind to the history of Australia. Especially “the lost generations”
The Stolen Generations or Stolen children) is a term used to describe those children of Australian Aboriginal descent who were removed from their families by the Australian and State government agencies. It was racially discriminatory, because it only applied to Aboriginal children on that scale. Football- Some discrimination law had been passed. allowed.
Between 1910 and 1970 up to 100,000 Aboriginal children were taken forcibly from their families.
The Government has stated there will be no compensation fund.
People of the Stolen Generation have started legal actions for compensation against the Government.
Most were under 5 years old. There was rarely any judicial process. To be Aboriginal was enough. They are known as the ‘Stolen Generations’. (Cultural)Heritage, Family name, origion.
Most were raised in state institutions. Some were adopted by white parents.

Many suffered physical and sexual abuse. Food and living conditions were poor!
The physical and emotional damage to those taken away was profound and lasting:
Most grew up in a hostile environment without family ties or cultural identity.
As adults, many suffered insecurity, lack of self esteem, feelings of worthlessness, depression, suicide, violence, and , de•lin•quen•cy (Crime), abuse of alcohol and drugs and inability to trust.
Lacking a pa•ren•tal model, many had difficulty bringing up their own children.
The scale of separation also had pro•fouuund consequences for the whole Aboriginal community - anger, powerlessness, an abiding distrust of police and officials and lack of purpose as well
They received little education, and were expected to go into low grade domestic and farming work.

In the result of this Today Aborigines suffer mental disorders and metal illness. Most of them are without a job and lots of them have drinking problem.

The Themes are identity, clash of culture, racism and upbringing.

The message in the text is that other children or the society never gave Willy an opportunity and chance to develop himself.
He was constantly mocked, teased and beaten up, because he was different, he was an abo.
The children imitate what their parents say.
For example the main character is saying the same things as the father said in his childhood.
Or he became a police officer just like his father.
I think that lots of the problems we have regarding bullying, discrimination are simply because of bad upbringing.

* Pardon my French
Supporting him, he gets recognition for his achievements.
Hits him because he feels the narrator had left him alone.

On February 13, 2008, the federal government of Australia, led by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, issued a formal apology to the Indigenous Australians over the Stolen Generations.
