Drinking in the USA back then and now

For more than 80 years ago the alcohol prohibition were launched in the USA. It was forbidden to sell or serve drinks with an alcohol content on more than 0.5%. Earlier it was the perception that religious groups with influence on the law were behind the prohibition. The so-called puritans but today we know that feminists and socially minded politicians also were supporting the law. Since the beginning of the 1800 the debate had been circulating and it culminated with the prohibition in 1920. It was however a failure, because of the easy access to liquor and that the prohibition was cause of a growth in organized crime allover the country.
On December the 5. 1933 the prohibition got canceled after several known people changed their mind and convinced the congress to change it. It is interesting to note that in connection with the prohibition the number of alcohol triggered diseases drubbed drastically and it weren’t before 1975 that the consumption of alcohol reached the level from before the prohibition.

Today the American students drinking habits are as followed:
43% of all students drink between four and five drinks rapidly in a row.
Every year 159.000 first year students have to give up on their studies because of drinking.
A student averagely uses around $ 1.000 a year on alcohol.
96% of all Americans are worried about drinking habits among people under 21 years.
That’s why 113 universities in year 2000 started a campaign with full-paged advertisements in order to lower the student’s consumption. The students do not have their habits from strangers; it weren’t uncommon in the 1970 when their parents went to the universities that the teachers would bring a beer to their student that they then could drink during the lectures.
